Mexico City and its sacred salamanders

Iconic salamanders that live exclusively in Mexico City’s Xochimilco lake complex, axolotls live permanently underwater and retain their larval features—including their feathery external gills—throughout their lives. Thanks to their unique physiology and ability to regrow severed limbs, axolotls have been treasured by both the ancient Aztecs, who considered them to be descendants of an important deity, and modern scientists, who have used them as lab models to study everything from tissue regeneration to cancer. However, the species is now critically endangered in the wild, suffering from the triple threat of habitat destruction, pollution, and the introduction of non-native predatory fish. It is also a canary in the coal mine for an ecosystem in extreme distress. Stone was an executive producer of this film, which was an official selection of the 2020 Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival.

chasing ghosts

In their quest to identify the pollinator of the ghost orchid for the first time, this team of conservation photographers and scientists spent three summers standing waist-deep in alligator- and snake-laden water, swatting air blackened by mosquitoes, and climbing to sometimes nausea-inducing heights. They came away with an even deeper love for Florida's wildest wetlands—and with surprising discoveries that may help to conserve both the endangered orchid and its shrinking home. Stone was an executive producer of this film, which won "Best Ecosystem Film - Short Form" and "Best Science in Nature Film - Short Form" at the 2020 Jackson Wild Media Awards.

SOUNDS of survival

Deep in the emerald cloud forests of Cusuco National Park of Honduras, scientists are on a quest to record the never-before-heard call of the endangered “exquisite spike-thumb frog” (Plectrohyla exquisita). What ensues is both a delightful portrait of the process of scientific discovery and an inspiring example of the power of sound as a tool for conservation. Stone was an executive producer of this film, which has won multiple awards and been selected for many film festivals, including the 2020 Jackson Hole World Wildlife Day Film Showcase.
